During the summer, children get enough vitamin D3 through diet and sun exposure, right? That is not entirely true. Find out why.
Vitamin D3 is necessary for a child for the healthy development of strong bones and teeth, but also for good immunity and defence against diseases. For a child to get the recommended 400 IU of vitamin D3 through the diet during the day, the food they should eat is:
- about 5 glasses of milk
- about 3 cans of tuna
- 1 medium-sized fish
- about 15 eggs
As this is hardly possible, parents are happy with the fact that vitamin D becomes active through sun exposure, and not just through diet. Namely, under the influence of the sun’s rays, the inactive form of vitamin D becomes active – vitamin D3.
However, aware of the harmful effects of sun exposure on delicate children’s skin and aware of the risk of damage and the appearance of carcinogenic phenomena on the skin, parents justifiably, rarely expose children to the sun without protection.
As protective creams and lotions block the sun’s rays and thus reduce the conversion of the inactive form of vitamin D into active D3, this prevents the daily supply. Thus, it is known that protection factor 8 (SPF 8) reduces the production of vitamin D by 95%, and protection factor 15 (SPF 15), by as much as 99%.
That is why the use of supplements containing vitamin D3 is recommended for children in development during the summer months.
